When war shatters her familiar world, Natalia is captured and held in an Italian detention camp. Surrounded by guards who speak a language she does not understand, she struggles to communicate what her life means to her.

She returns to the melody she remembers and begins expanding those few notes into an opera. To make herself understood, she undertakes the extraordinary task of learning Italian while in captivity — writing a work that expresses her humanity in the language of her captors.
