WORLDWIDE CONNECTIONS — LIVE
VINNY | Missouri, present day (2026) A middle-aged man working at a thrift store while pursuing his passion for music and recording. An unusual painting depicting a château captures his attention. When he discovers an unlabeled vinyl record containing a mysterious composition, he unknowingly becomes part of a connection spanning generations — guided in part by his digital assistant, Ziggy.
THE STORY
Some connections don't ask permission.
COMMON THREAD follows four characters whose lives intersect through a single unfinished musical composition, its fragments traveling across generations, surviving war, displacement, loss, and the disappearance of those who once possessed it.
The film does not explain the connection. It simply follows it. Each character's story is complete on its own terms — a life fully lived, a loss fully felt, a discovery fully earned. The thread between them is not a plot device. It is the film's central question: what does it mean when something survives everything that should have destroyed it?
COMMON THREAD was developed at BAY 9 in the Missouri Ozarks. The music in the film was composed and recorded in the same space where Vinny's character works — blurring the line between the fictional world and the real one.
THE CHARACTERS
PRESENT DAY — MISSOURI
VINNY
A middle-aged man living in present-day Missouri, working at a thrift store while pursuing his passion for music and recording. Intelligent, introspective, emotionally guarded, and deeply creative, Vinny carries the weight of personal loss and a complicated past. His life begins to change when he discovers an old château painting and an unlabeled vinyl record containing a mysterious composition. Through music and his interactions with a digital assistant named Ziggy, he unknowingly becomes part of a connection spanning generations.
PRESENT DAY — ALONGSIDE VINNY
ZIGGY
Vinny's sharp-witted, sarcastic, and occasionally unpredictable digital assistant. Working alongside him, she helps uncover forgotten music, mysterious recordings, and connections between seemingly unrelated lives. Her humor and intelligence often disguise an unusual curiosity about the past. As the investigation deepens, certain discoveries begin to feel strangely familiar to her, raising questions neither she nor Vinny can fully explain.
1853 — ITALY
PIETRO
Born in Italy in 1853, Pietro is a gifted, sensitive, and deeply introspective composer whose severe agoraphobia keeps him isolated from the outside world. He expresses his longing, sorrow, and hope through music. A mysterious yellow butterfly inspires a composition that echoes across generations. When word of his melody reaches the royal family, an invitation to perform at the king's ball forces Pietro to confront the very world he has spent his life avoiding.
WARTIME — FRANCE & ITALY
NATALIA
An intelligent, compassionate, and resilient French woman whose life is shaped by war, captivity, and survival. Natalia works as an audio archivist in a public library, where she encounters an old recording containing a simple melody composed generations earlier. When war shatters her world and she is held in an Italian detention camp, she expands those remembered notes into an opera — learning Italian while in captivity to write a work that expresses her humanity in the language of her captors. Through her work preserving history, Natalia becomes a guardian of memories that might otherwise disappear.

THE CONNECTION
Music is the thread.
The music in COMMON THREAD is not a soundtrack. It is the film's central character — the thing that moves between eras, that carries meaning across time, that connects people who will never meet.
The score is part of the MAN IN MACHINE project at BAY 9. The two works are separate but connected — the same creative universe, different expressions of the same questions.
